Meet Nick, our talented graphic design intern from the Wilson School of Design. During his three-week practicum with us, Nick dove into a variety of exciting projects, including collaborating on GRAPHICS FOR the Old Spaghetti Factory, BRAINSTORMING ideas for THE EXECUTION OF COLLATERAL WITH OUR Knotty Games REBRAND, and experimenting with motion graphics.
Despite the fast pace and challenging assignments, he approached each one with enthusiasm, a fresh perspective, AND A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR!
Read his Q&A below to find out more about his time at H18.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR DISCIPLINE?
A: My discipline right now is graphic design. I am passionate about combining creativity with problem-solving to create designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. I enjoy developing motion graphics and logo designs. If you need a business card, I got chu.
Q: GRADUATION IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, WHAT’S NEXT FOR NICK?
A: Ha, I never really thought it through that far. I really can’t say for sure, especially since I also want to explore my other interests and see where that takes me. Right now, I’m more focused on preparing for my graduation and finishing my last semester. I can say that wherever I end up, design and creative work will most likely always be a part of my journey to my end goal.
Q: IS THERE SOMETHING THAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT THIS PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE?
A: The contrast between the experience working for an agency vs. going to school and what the instructors tell you about the working experience. I definitely got more focused and interested in the projects I was assigned while interning here; it felt very rewarding. I’m pretty sure school stresses me out way more compared to working for an agency like Hangar 18.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECT YOU WORKED ON DURING YOUR PRACTICUM AT H18?
A: Probably between the Old Spaghetti Factory project or the Knotty Games projects. I got to be a lot more crazy and creative with one project and more careful and precise with the other. More so than any of the projects I’ve done in the past. It gave me insight into always experimenting with things that can lead to something that could look really good.

Q: Do you have any fun stories about your commute from White Rock to Gastown?
A: Nothing really too fun about the 1-hour drive to work, but the drive back had crazy views of sunsets in the city. Especially getting to see the more modern-looking architecture with the sunset and orange-looking sky. Unfortunately, I forgot which road I usually took to see them.
Q: What made you go with Hangar 18?
A: The projects I saw on the portfolio website were diverse and interesting. It gave me the sense to explore that diversity and understand more about the different types of design.
Q: What was your biggest win during your practicum?
A: Everything, getting the chance to work with Hangar 18. Probably a safe and boring answer, but the experience definitely gave me a clear view of what I could expect in my future. I had a very pleasant time here.
Q: ANY LAST WORDS?
A: Thanks for having me! I wish I could stay longer as an intern before going back to school.
